Translate a word problem into something you can solve
Name the unknown, connect the quantities and check the result in the original situation.
In this guide
Set up the relationship first
Before calculating, identify what the question asks for and what each number measures. Choose a variable for the unknown, draw a small table or diagram if it helps, and write the relationship between the quantities. Avoid choosing an operation solely because a familiar keyword appears.
Work through an original example
A bag costs ₱480 after a 20% discount. What was its original price? Let p be the original price. Paying 80% of the original gives 0.80p = 480, so p = 600. Check: 20% of ₱600 is ₱120, and ₱600 − ₱120 = ₱480. The answer is ₱600, not ₱576; adding 20% to the discounted price uses the wrong base.
Finish with a reasonableness check
Read the question again after solving. Your answer should have the correct unit and fit the stated conditions.
- Ask whether the answer should be larger or smaller than the given quantity.
- Substitute the answer back into the relationship.
- Write a short final sentence so the value answers the actual question.
